Thank you for reading Ian. For me, control can be broken down into two categories. First, control of oneself and one's environment. These are the healthy kinds of control that should be encouraged and and given room to develop. The other side is the kind of control that is directed towards other people. This is where the issue gets tricky, because while control of others can be quite dangerous, at times it is in people's best interest to be controlled to a certain extent by others. I think the key is determining a) whether the person desires to relinquish their power and b) monitoring our intentions. Good intentions lead to positive control, bad to negative, and so on.

This was a great article, and much of it rang true for me. I was hoping to engage in a conversation about the last challenge, about control.

Thank you for putting control into context, leveling the playing field between the control over one's spouse with control over shoelaces. All of these things are skills that we learn. So I have to ask, what sort of control is valuable and what control hurts us? When we start to play the games of office politics, when we start to fight tooth and nail for promotions or for the ability to control our coworker's emotions, I feel like we are hurting ourselves. But why is this the case, and can we ascertain some sort of rule of thumb to make us more efficient in our searches for happiness? On the other side of the spectrum, one could simply learn to experience life as it is, never reach for control except in the most base of cases.
